The stories about Amelia that tend to fascinate most people are the ones that say that she did not die when she disappeared in 1937. This theory was first publicized in 1943 by RKO Studios, which produced a film called Flight for Freedom, starring Rosalind Russell. It was the film’s contention, and that of several writers’ decades later, that Amelia purposely flew off course, heading not for Howland but for the Japanese Mandates, islands that, through agreement, the United States could not inspect. The United States knew that the Japanese were building up their military in the islands they occupied but did not know if airstrips for bombers had been constructed. The RKO movie had Amelia begin the last leg of her around-the-world flight with the intention of “crash landing” on one of the Japanese islands, which would prompt the U.S. Navy to ignore past agreements and hurry to the area and rescue the pilot —– all the while accomplishing their real mission of photographing the massive Japanese military build-up. Rosalind Russell’s “Amelia” learned that the Japanese discovered the ruse and intended to pick her up before the rescue mission could get underway. She heroically crashed into the ocean near the island. She was killed during the crash, but the rescue effort was able to take place anyway.

Although the plot of the film was presented as fiction, there is much to support the belief that Amelia Earhart was indeed on a secret mission to photograph the Japanese-occupied islands, especially Saipan. As late as 1949, Amelia’s mother stated, “Amelia told me many things, but there were some things she couldn’t tell me. I am convinced she was on some sort of government mission, probably on verbal orders.”

But orders from whom? It has been claimed that they came directly from the President himself, Amelia’s close friend, Franklin D. Roosevelt. He wanted to use Amelia’s around-the-world flight and subsequent crash in the Japanese island area as an excuse to examine their hidden war preparations. Many believe this idea is a credible one and also believe that Amelia may not have died when her plane went down but was captured by the Japanese instead. Rumors spread over the years about a young woman who was captured on Saipan in 1937 and was taken to Japan and executed as a spy. Similar stories emanated from the Japanese islands over the years. Natives and Japanese officers who survived the war recalled seeing Amelia as a prisoner and witnessing either her imprisonment or her execution in Japan.

In 2017, a documentary was featured on the History Channel that claimed to solve the mystery of Amelia’s disappearance —– stating that she was captured by the Japanese and the filmmakers had a photograph that proved it. The photo, taken before World War II, featured a group of people on a dock in Jaluit Atoll, one of the Marshall Islands. In the photo —– the filmmakers stated —– were two Caucasian people: a man standing next to a post and a person of indeterminate sex squatting at the edge of the dock.
